Told you so (no, I’m not paraniod…erm…)

Friday, October 14th, 2005

As usual the scary boy in black got stopped and searched by airport security. I’m getting used to this, I get this almost every time I fly. I go through the metal detector, the metal detector doesn’t beep, nothing wrong with my luggage… But still they tell me to “come over here” and then proceed to search me. Mmm – the joys of flying.

Well, at least I got there… over one hour too late, after they in addition to the first delay also had a little “technical diffcuilty” that lasted a few minutes. Well well…I’m here now – let’s hope the return trip goes better, perhaps I’ll only get searched that time… *sigh*

A great way to start your morning

…by going to the airport at 06:00 and then getting told that the darned flight has been postponed and is now leaving at 07:40 – oh joy!

*yawn*

Sooo, plane leaves in ~2 hours and I’ve had, let me see, 0 hours, 0 minutes and 0 seconds of sleep this night. Mmm…

SkoleLinux developer gathering

Thursday, October 13th, 2005

It’s time for yet another SkoleLinux (aka. Debian-Edu) developer gathering. My plane leaves tomorrow at 06:20 – that’s right 06:20 IN THE MORNING! Which means I’ve got to be up roughly around 5, yuck. I’ll probably be working on some KDE 3.5 translation and possibly a little bit of development or discussion about TransPO.

This time around it’s also the yearly meeting of FRISK (free software in schools), never been to that one before so that might be interesting. Well, wish me luck and lets hope^W^W^W^W^W^W^W^W^WI’ll get up tomorrow!

Last.fm

After reading AdamW’s blog post about Last.fm I decided to try it out and turns out I rather like the thing.
So now all of you big brothers…erm…I mean music lovers out there can spy on my music taste at http://www.last.fm/user/Zero_Dogg/ :o

GoldenPod

Saturday, October 8th, 2005

GoldenPod is a podcast client written in perl by yours truly. It is backwards compatible with bashpodder and thus in theory all GUI’s written for bashpodder should work with goldenpod. In addition to simply downloading podcasts into directories named by date you also get podcasts sorted in a catalogue directory by the name of the podcast (as supplied in the RSS feed or if that is not available, goldenpod will make a guess based upon the filename) which makes it easier to locate older issues of a specific podcast.

GoldenPod also makes it easier to manage your podcasts and is portable music player friendly. It has a function that can copy N of the newest podcasts to the supplied directory. Example:
goldenpod --files 4 --copy /mnt/removable/podcasts/
will copy the 4 newest podcasts to /mnt/removable/podcasts/. As 4 is the default it is the same as
goldenpod --copy /mnt/removable/podcasts/

Along the same lines it can delete the N oldest podcasts. Example:
goldenpod --files 4 --rmold
As with –copy, 4 is the default. So the above example is the same as:
goldenpod --rmold.

Another nifty feature is that you can ignore a perl regular expression pattern when downloading, copying or deleting podcasts. This can also be set in the configuration file to ignore by default (however, the setting in the config file does not apply to –rmold, the commandline option does). Example:
goldenpod --ignore-pattern '(foo|bar|baz)'
This will download all podcasts other than those matching the regular expression (foo|bar|baz), that is, all files that does not have either foo, bar or baz in their name.

For more information about goldenpod you can download it and read the readme and manpage.
You can download it both in tar.gz and tar.bz2 from http://savannah.nongnu.org/download/goldenpod/.
The latest release when I’m writing this is 0.4.

Please post supports requests at https://savannah.nongnu.org/support/?group=goldenpod and not here. Easier to manage them at savannah.

Another browser based game: NationStates

Sunday, October 2nd, 2005

NationStates is a government game. You get issues to solve, you can take part in the UN and move to different regions. The game seems to be quite good, and i’ve been playing since yesterday. It doesn’t require much work to play it, nor much time. You can get from two issues per day to one issue per weekday to no issues at all. The way your nation evolves is through the decisions you make. My nation is called Dathir, you can get information about Dathir here.

Visit this for something completely unrelated to NationStates but still fun.

Browser based games

Saturday, October 1st, 2005

I’ve been spending the day looking at a few browser based games. The ones that I’ve come up with that I’m going to continue playing is Urban Dead which is related to this and Nowhere Else and Beyond. The first one is a undead game where you take the role of a undead or a human (that is likely to turn undead :P) in a city and get a set amount of movement points every day (50 iirc) – the second one is a javascript based fantasy game – which is amazingly well made for a browser game, however has a few grammatical errors here and there, but nothing big. If you’ve got any hints on other games I should try be sure to leave them in a comment to this post, however the game must not require the use of any proprietary software (read: flash or java) – javascript is okay.
